The River Picnic

Picnickers brought different supplies to the riverbank. There is exactly one solution. Use each clue to match the people, keepsakes and places.

Your clues

  1. Theo visited the bridge.
  2. Mara brought the thermos.
  3. Alma brought the kite.
  4. Rory visited the meadow.
  5. Rory brought the blanket.
  6. Mara visited the bend.

Make the matches

Tap a square to mark yes (✓), no (×), or clear it. A confirmed match rules out the rest of its row and column.

What this puzzle is about

The River Picnic is a four-person deduction puzzle set along a riverbank. Rory, Alma, Mara, and Theo each brought one supply (a blanket, a thermos, a kite, or a basket) and settled at one spot: the meadow, the bridge, the bend, or the dock. Six clues lead to a single solution, and you can reach it by reasoning alone.

Who it suits

This is a hard 4 × 4 × 4 grid, but a gentle one: all six clues are direct statements, with no “did not” or connecting clues. The challenge comes from the size. With four options in every category, you need to keep three grids in step and use elimination to fill the squares the clues never mention. That makes it a good first hard puzzle for anyone who has finished a few easy grids and wants to try the bigger format.

How to start

Mark all six direct clues first, three about supplies and three about spots, and clear each row and column as you go. Then look at the people-and-keepsakes grid: one person and one supply still have no ✓. Do the same in the people-and-places grid, and fill in the keepsakes-and-places grid last, from the matches you have already made.

How to solve this puzzle

Each person has one keepsake and visited one place. A yes mark eliminates the other options in the same row and column. Combine the clues until all three grids agree.
